Hello and thank you so much for taking the time to get to know us a little better! We can only imagine how difficult this decision must be for you, and we appreciate you considering us as part of your plan for your child!
We are Heather and Kal, and we are excited to give you a peek into what our lives are like. We have been together for more than 20 years and are thrilled to be expanding our family through the process of adoption (which is something we’ve talked about doing since we first started dating in 2001!). We love to travel, eat, and spend time with our family and friends. We met on campus during frosh week at our university during a “Chubby Bunny” bubblegum competition in 1999! It took us a couple of years of being friends to figure out that we actually wanted to be together, but after that we were inseparable. After knowing each other for nearly 22 years, we are just about as close as two people can be. We started out as best friends, and that has helped create a strong foundation for our marriage. Even after all this time, there is no one we would rather spend time with than each other. We never seem to run out to things to talk about and are always happiest when we are together (even if it’s just running errands or cleaning the house).
We always knew that we wanted to have children, whether biologically or through adoption. Adoption was never simply our fallback plan if we were unable to have biological children; we’ve been talking about wanting to adopt since we were in college. We can’t wait to be parents, and are excited to learn more about your hopes and dreams for your child and how we can help make them come true.
We are wholly committed to leaving this world a better place and having a positive impact on its future. Our desire to do good in this lifetime will mean that our child is involved in community outreach early on and taught to be kind and loving towards everyone. We value hard work and resiliency, and hope to cultivate those qualities in our child. While travel and food are important to us as ways to experiences others’ lives and cultures, we also want to help our child discover what is important to them and how they can be the best version of themselves as they grow up.
One thing that will never change for us is the importance of family and keeping those connections strong as time goes on. Our hope is that our child will embody the core values that we hold dear, while still having room to be (and become!) who they are as an individual.
We love to travel! We’ve been all over the world together, and are always looking for new places to visit, both here and abroad. One of our favorite locations is Italy; we’ve been back several times over the past few years and can’t wait to go again! Traveling to Japan is high on our list of next stops, as is India to visit Kal’s family. Experiencing as many new cultures and cities as we can is a life goal for us, and it’s one we can’t wait to share with our child.
Traveling is one of the most important ways to build character and resiliency in children and expand their understanding of the world beyond their small corner of New Jersey, and we fully plan to continue traveling with our child as soon as he/she has a passport!
We also love to eat and explore new restaurants wherever we go. Eating healthy is also important to us, and we spend a lot of time shopping and preparing healthy, balanced meals at home. We also believe strongly in the connection between a strong body and a strong mind, and make time throughout the week for workouts, yoga, meditation, and spending time outdoors.
We live in a truly diverse town in northern NJ with easy access to both NYC and the shore (both of which we visit often!). We have a small downtown area that has some of the best ice cream and Italian food in New Jersey, and they throw lots of kid-friendly events year-round. Our school system is excellent (which is one of the reasons we choose to live here), and remarkably diverse; your child will be exposed to any number of cultures, races, and religions. Our house is a 4-bedroom colonial on a quiet street that ends in a cul-de-sac; no one drives into our neighborhood that doesn’t already live here. We have a large fenced-in backyard that is perfect for playing sports, throwing big parties, or just sitting and enjoying nature!
We would be thrilled with the prospect of an open adoption, but we are also happy to let you take the lead on deciding how comfortable you are with us sharing pictures and stories with you on a regular basis.
As an interracial couple, we have experienced firsthand magic that happens when you bring together different perspectives and cultures; both of us are better people for having expanded our lives to include one another’s ethnic traditions and philosophies. We believe deeply in having friends of different races and backgrounds, and we consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to have such a diverse group of people in our lives to learn from. Diversity is a power to be celebrated and held up as an ideal to be achieved; we can’t wait to possibly include another culture into our family!
