We are David and Chong. Thanks so much for checking out our profile!
We met 5 years ago at a jazz club in Oakland when we were both living in San Francisco. Within 2 months, we became a couple and never looked back. Having met later in life after prior relationships, we both knew we wanted to move out of the city to start a family.
We got started on our adoption journey back in California 4 years ago, and went through 20 hours of trainings on the weekends. Unexpected events, however, arose. Chong’s mother passed away 2 years ago from cancer, and shortly after, we were both recruited for new jobs in New York City. So, we made the move to the east coast. In retrospect, it’s probably just as well we did not adopt initially as it would have been too disruptive to start a family during that time.
David grew up in North Carolina where both his dad and mom were teachers. As a child, they didn’t have much material wealth, so there was a lot of emphasis on doing it yourself – homecooked meals, growing garden vegetables in the backyard, catching fish in the local lake. He hopes to instill this same independent and can-do spirit in another child.
Chong grew up in Asia before coming to America as a teenager. His parents were divorced, so he remembers moving around a lot with his mom. Women have played a huge part in Chong’s life: his grandmother and aunts “adopted” him into their care and were great role models. Although they have passed away, he feels compelled to pass the torch to share this with another child.
David according to Chong:
A hallmark of David is his infinite kindness and compassion, coming from a family of 2 older brothers with kids. We meet up at least once a year during Christmas, and we’ve had family vacations together to the Caribbean, Montana and Alaska.
David is more methodical and likes to plan. He loves Broadway musicals and classical music; he is social and outgoing and hopes to share his love for orchestras and theater with a child. He volunteers actively and is very involved in the local Episcopal church.
Chong according to David:
Chong is commitment and perseverance personified, and rises to the occasion no matter what challenges are presented. He is more intuitive and likes to see the big picture.
Chong loves to swim and read and hopes to share these past-times. He loves teaching as an adjunct faculty, always making time for his students.
We live in a diverse and family conducive neighborhood in New Jersey, where we walk to nearby schools, parks, libraries, and lots of food and entertainment options. We are huge homebodies and like making trips to local markets, cooking at home, hiking, and exploring different neighborhoods. When traveling, we try to live like locals, whether in Cabo, Croatia, or most recently, Honduras.
In this same spirit of openness, we want to keep you informed of the child’s formative years in whatever manner is most comfortable to you.
For all our differences, we are united on things that truly matter: the journey to create a life of meaning. A child growing up in our household would receive the best of both worlds. She or he would appreciate the value of diversity, and hopefully see how differences can be a strength or an asset.
