Hello! We are Colleen & Josh and we are so thankful you are getting to know us here. We were both born and raised in the Midwest, but had to come to NYC to find each other. We initially met singing in the same church choir, then again at a mutual friend’s birthday party when we both went back for more waffles! That day, we discovered we had many things in common (including waffles). We loved listening to each other’s stories and songs. Twenty years ago, Josh came to NYC from Wisconsin to attend Columbia University.
Ten years ago, Colleen moved from the West Coast. She ended up loving Brooklyn and Josh soon followed her there so he could spend more time with her. We spent many days in Brooklyn walking, talking, laughing, and eating at fun new restaurants. We fell in love right away. Josh says he loved Colleen because she knew where all the good bakeries were located. (She still does!) But really he fell for Colleen’s heart for others, her wit and laughter, and her incredible beauty. Colleen fell for Josh’s humor, his amazing listening skills, and how he displays kindness and patience with everyone he meets.
Josh proposed to Colleen on the farm that has been in his family for generations. He was so nervous that he got down on both knees, but she still said yes! Five months later, we got married in Brooklyn. We were honored that our family and friends would travel from all around the country just to celebrate with us in the place of our love story. We have been married for 2 1/2 years.
We travelled a lot our first year of marriage and then settled down in New Jersey. Having grown up in the suburbs, it was natural to find a family-oriented area to start the next chapter of our lives - a family. Of course, NYC and Brooklyn are a quick drive away and we visit often to visit our favorite places and to keep exploring!
First and foremost, we love and respect God and each other in all aspects of life. Our home is a peaceful place where family and friends are always welcome. Sundays mornings are set aside for church, while praying and learning about Jesus happens every day.
We support and celebrate each other. We always have each other’s back. We believe a happy home is filled with love, laughter, singing, pancakes on Saturday mornings and lots of ice cream with sprinkles! We enjoy friends and family parties and birthday celebrations. Our friends and our god-daughter live nearby and we often go to each other’s houses to play outside and eat meals together. Josh loves to keep busy doing yard work and projects around the house. Colleen enjoys cooking for guests, reading, and drinking coffee. We fill the house with music and beauty while always learning new things.
Family is important to us. Colleen is the oldest of two brothers and Josh is the youngest with an older brother and sister. Together we have 3 nephews and 2 nieces ages 5-19. They live in beautiful places such as Colorado, Wyoming, North Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, and we love to travel to see them all. Colleen’s mom lives nearby and we often spend time with her. She is still the best storyteller and reader of children’s books!
Our favorite place to relax is on the beach with the sound of the waves, but we also love a good bookstore or small cafe. We also like to visit NYC and Brooklyn to find cute stores and treats, visit art museums and take lots of pictures. At home, we love to walk outside daily and Josh loves to bike on the local trail. Quiet time is also important to us. After dinner, we often curl up on the couch to read, watch TV or do puzzles.
We enjoy road trips and often go to the his family farm in PA to see Josh’s parents and family. One of Josh’s family tradition is to play games after dinner, so we love to play cards and board games after a meal, and a long walk is always a good way to “walk off “dessert. The more players the better!
Our church family is also important to us. We love to see them on Sundays and at special get-togethers.
We really want to be parents and help a child become the person God created them to be. Even before we got married we talked about adoption. Josh said, “Maybe there’s a kid out there that needs a mom and a dad, and we could be their family.” In the Bible Jesus said, “And everyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me.” (Matthew 18:5 NLT)
We look forward to playground outings, basketball games, swimming lessons, soccer practice, art class, dance, hiking, skating, or piano lessons. We will do everything possible to support a child’s development and talents. We can’t wait to host birthday parties and play dates and go on fun road trips and vacations. We want to continue the wonderful parts of our childhood memories and also make our own new family traditions. We promise to provide a safe, stable, joy-filled, and loving home where a child can grow in faith and confidence into an absolutely amazing future.
Although we do not know your specific circumstances, Colleen was faced with the decision to place her son for adoption many years ago. Colleen is a birth mom and is blessed with an open adoption relationship with her birth son and his parents - his family was at our wedding! We understand that everyone has different needs, so we will respect however much openness you prefer, both now and in the future.
We know first-hand that open adoption can be great for all family members involved. We believe in honesty and transparency in all relationships and would love for you to be an important part of your child’s life. We plan on sharing the adoption story with our future adopted child right from the beginning. We look forward to letters, phone calls, and visits if you prefer.
We embrace cultural diversity and look forward to bringing our future adopted child’s culture into our home and hearts. We will find schools, neighborhoods, relationships, and more that support his or her cultural background. We love making new traditions and plan to embrace the cultures of all birth family members alike! We are currently adding all kinds of books to our multicultural children’s bookshelf. Next up - more music!
We sang in a choir at a church that had more than 105 nationalities, giving us exposure to many new points of view and traditions from so many wonderful people. We cherish all of our friends and many are from different countries, nationalities and backgrounds. They have different languages, recipes, traditions and experiences. We continue to learn from them and enjoy it very much.
